Prophet's Mosque Cooling System Enhanced by 117,000 Square Meters of Thassos Marble
White Thassos marble is one of the most prominent architectural elements of the Prophet’s Mosque and a key component of its environmental cooling system, providing comfort for worshippers inside the mosque, on its rooftop, and across its outdoor courtyards.
The white marble covering the mosque’s courtyards and rooftop helps reduce ambient temperatures, allowing visitors to feel the cooling effect beneath their feet while praying or walking through the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque. This reflects the extensive care the Kingdom devotes to the two holy mosques and to serving pilgrims, visitors, and Umrah performers.
The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque noted that 117,000 square meters of white Thassos marble have been used to clad the rooftop and outdoor courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque. The marble pieces vary in size, forming part of the mosque’s architectural design, prayer areas, and outdoor courtyards, while adding an aesthetic character to its facilities and components. Together, they constitute one of the largest open marble-covered areas dedicated to worshippers.
The authority said Thassos marble, renowned for its bright white color, was selected for its high quality and its ability to reflect sunlight while maintaining a cool surface temperature, making it an ideal choice for prayer areas. The marble also undergoes continuous polishing, cleaning, and sanitization using health-safe and environmentally friendly materials that preserve its purity, luster, and thermal properties, ensuring it remains ready for worshippers throughout the year.
