To Bolster Haramain High-Speed Railway Fleet, SAR Announces Purchase of 20 New Trains
Under the patronage of Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Board of Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) Saleh Al-Jasser, and in the presence of Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Óscar Puente Santiago, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) announced the purchase of 20 new trains from Spanish manufacturer Talgo to enhance the Haramain High-Speed Railway fleet.
The move aligns with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and strengthens the transport ecosystem’s readiness to serve pilgrims. It also contributes to improving operational efficiency between Makkah and Madinah, reflecting SAR’s pivotal role in serving pilgrims through proactive planning and the continuous development of the Haramain High-Speed Railway’s operational infrastructure.
Deliveries of the new trains are scheduled to begin by the end of 2028, with full delivery expected by 2031. The trains will serve the entire Haramain High-Speed Railway network across its five stations.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway is the fastest mode of transport between the two holy cities, operating at speeds of up to 300 km/h. The journey between Makkah and Madinah takes approximately two hours and includes three intermediate stations: Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport, and King Abdullah Economic City. The current fleet comprises 35 trains.
With the new additions, the fleet will expand to 55 trains, enhancing network readiness and capacity to meet growing demand, particularly during peak Umrah and Hajj seasons.
Each train consists of 13 carriages, including eight economy-class and five business-class carriages, with a total capacity of 417 seats. These include 304 economy-class and 113 business-class seats. The trains are equipped with a dedicated carriage for passengers with disabilities, ensuring inclusive access and an enhanced travel experience for all users.
