Arab League Council Condemns Threats to Arab Sovereignty, Calls for End to Israeli Occupation
At its 164th meeting of foreign ministers, the Council of the League of Arab States issued a resolution on a shared vision for security and cooperation in the region, condemning any proposals that threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states and emphasizing the need to end Israel's occupation of Arab lands.
The council affirmed the principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. It also emphasized the importance of adhering to international law, particularly regarding the preservation of states' political independence and territorial integrity.
The resolution highlighted the need to address the root causes of conflict by reaching a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause. This includes ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and other Arab territories, establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and halting settlement expansion.
The council warned that the continued obstruction of a solution is a primary factor in regional instability and a pretext for the spread of extremism. It also called for a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East and urged all states in the region to respect one another’s security and sovereignty.
The resolution stated that the absence of a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue is the main cause for escalating violence, adding that peaceful coexistence and economic cooperation cannot be achieved without a just solution.
